The Waverly-Shell Rock community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Suz SmolikHagen, a beloved principal, mother of three, and cherished friend. 


Suz passed away unexpectedly on July 6, 2024, at the age of 48, after suffering a heart attack while attending an educational conference in Atlanta, Georgia. 

Her untimely death has left a profound void in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and students.

Born on May 2, 1976, Suz was a beacon of positivity and dedication. She grew up in Waverly, IA, and dedicated her life to education and community service. 

Suz earned her degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa and began her teaching career with a passion for nurturing young minds. 

Her dedication and leadership skills quickly became evident, leading her to serve as the principal of Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School.

As a principal, Suz was known for her unwavering commitment to her students and staff. 

She fostered an environment of inclusivity, respect, and academic excellence. Her door was always open, and she took the time to listen to and support everyone in her school community. 

Suz's enthusiasm for learning and her compassionate leadership left an indelible mark on the school and the broader community.

Outside of her professional life, Suz was a devoted mother to her three children, Emma, Jake, and Lily. 

Her love for her children was boundless, and she was their greatest advocate, always cheering them on in their pursuits and providing unwavering support. 

Suz balanced her career and family life with grace and determination, creating a loving and nurturing home environment.

Suz's sudden passing is a tremendous loss for the Waverly-Shell Rock community. Her impact on the lives she touched through her work in education and her personal relationships will be remembered and cherished by many. 

The community has rallied around her family, providing support and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.

Suz is survived by her three children, her parents, her siblings, and a large extended family. 

Her legacy of love, dedication, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A memorial service to honor Suz SmolikHagen's life will be held on July 15, 2024, at the Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School gymnasium. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a scholarship fund established in Suz's name, aimed at supporting students pursuing careers in education.

Suz SmolikHagen's life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her family, her students, and her community. 

Though her time was cut short, her legacy of love, dedication, and positive impact will continue to resonate, reminding all who knew her of the profound difference one person can make in the lives of many.
