Richard Evans, affectionately known as Elder Evans, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, at the age of 76. 


His departure marks the end of an era for his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched through his unwavering strength, devotion, and service to the community.

Born on October 15, 1947, in Savannah, Georgia, Richard was the eldest of five children in a close-knit family. 

From an early age, he exhibited a natural leadership quality and a profound sense of responsibility, traits that would define his life’s journey. 

He graduated from Savannah High School and went on to earn a degree in Theology from Emory University, solidifying his path in spiritual and community leadership.

Elder Evans devoted over five decades of his life to serving as a pastor and mentor, guiding his congregation with wisdom, compassion, and an unshakable faith. 

He was the senior pastor at Grace Community Church for 35 years, where he was beloved for his inspiring sermons, comforting presence, and tireless dedication to his parishioners. 

His leadership extended beyond the church walls as he was actively involved in numerous community outreach programs, offering support and hope to those in need.

Richard’s commitment to his family was as profound as his commitment to his faith. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Margaret, for 50 years, and a loving father to their three children, Robert, Laura, and Stephen. 

His grandchildren, whom he adored, remember him as a source of endless love, wisdom, and encouragement. 

Family gatherings were a cornerstone of Richard’s life, filled with laughter, stories, and shared faith.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Elder Evans was a passionate advocate for social justice and education. 

He served on the boards of several local non-profits, championing causes such as youth mentorship, educational access, and community development. 

His efforts earned him numerous awards and recognitions, including the Community Leader of the Year award from the Savannah Civic Association.

Richard’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, selfless service, and profound love for his community and family. 

His life was a testament to the power of devotion and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. 

He is survived by his wife Margaret, his children Robert (Emily) Evans, Laura (James) Mitchell, and Stephen (Angela) Evans, and his six grandchildren.

A celebration of Elder Richard Evans’ life will be held at Grace Community Church on July 14, 2024, at 3:00 PM. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Grace Community Outreach Program, continuing Richard’s lifelong mission of helping those in need.
