Obituary: Health Advocate Marilyn Wong, 70, The Dalles

Marilyn Wong, a revered health advocate and cherished resident of The Dalles, passed away peacefully at the age of 70. Her death marks the end of a life dedicated to improving the well-being of her community and championing causes close to her heart.


Marilyn’s tireless work and unwavering compassion have left an indelible mark on The Dalles and beyond.

Born on April 3, 1954, in Portland, Oregon, Marilyn grew up with a strong sense of community and a passion for helping others.

She earned her nursing degree from Oregon Health & Science University and later completed her Master’s in Public Health.

Marilyn began her career as a registered nurse, working in various hospitals and clinics before transitioning to public health advocacy.

Marilyn’s commitment to health advocacy was evident in her numerous roles within the community. 

She served as the director of The Dalles Public Health Department for over two decades, where she was instrumental in implementing programs aimed at reducing health disparities and improving access to care. 

Her initiatives included vaccination drives, health education workshops, and support services for underserved populations.

Her colleagues remember Marilyn as a visionary leader who combined professional expertise with genuine empathy. 

She was known for her ability to listen and her relentless pursuit of solutions that addressed the root causes of health issues. 

Marilyn’s work extended beyond The Dalles; she collaborated with state and national health organizations, contributing to policy changes that benefited countless individuals.

Beyond her professional achievements, Marilyn was a beloved figure in her personal life. She was an avid gardener, often sharing the fruits of her labor with friends and neighbors. 

Marilyn was also a talented cook, known for her community dinners that brought people together and fostered a sense of belonging. Her warmth, generosity, and sense of humor endeared her to all who knew her.

Marilyn is survived by her husband of 45 years, Thomas Wong; her children, Jennifer and Michael; and her three grandchildren, who were the light of her life. 

Her family remembers her as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who always put others first.

A memorial service will be held at The Dalles Civic Auditorium on Saturday, July 10, at 2 p.m. to celebrate Marilyn’s life and legacy. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Dalles Public Health Fund, a cause that Marilyn passionately supported throughout her life.

Marilyn Wong’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and advocacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. 

She leaves behind a community profoundly grateful for her contributions and deeply saddened by her loss.
