Sumter County mourns the loss of Rusty Gentry, a dedicated former Sheriff's Communications Officer, whose passing has deeply saddened the community. 


Rusty, renowned for his unwavering commitment to public service, left an indelible mark through his selfless dedication and compassion.

Born and raised in Sumter County, Rusty Gentry dedicated his career to serving and protecting his community. 

He began his tenure as a Sheriff's Communications Officer over two decades ago, quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone of the local law enforcement communications network. 

His calm demeanor and professionalism under pressure earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and community members alike.

Rusty's role extended beyond his official duties; he was a trusted confidant and a source of support for his fellow officers and dispatchers. 

His ability to maintain composure during critical situations was instrumental in ensuring effective communication and swift responses to emergencies.

Outside of work, Rusty was an active member of various community organizations, volunteering his time to improve safety and promote unity within Sumter County. 

His genuine concern for others and willingness to lend a helping hand touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rusty Gentry is survived by his loving family: his wife, Emily, and their three children, Sarah, Michael, and Jacob. 

His legacy of service and commitment to his community will be cherished and remembered by all. 

A memorial service to celebrate Rusty's life and honor his contributions will be held at Sumter County Sheriff's Office on July 15, 2024, at 3 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, an organization Rusty held dear. Rusty Gentry's legacy of selflessness and dedication will continue to inspire future generations in Sumter County and beyond.
