Inside the Cameron Park home, deputies uncovered a heartbreaking scene that no community ever expects to confront. On the night of August 21, the peaceful suburban neighborhood was shattered by violence, leaving behind a trail of grief and unanswered questions.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office responded swiftly to reports of gunfire at the 3000 block of Oakwood Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a tragic tableau: a mother, Marissa N. Divodi-Lessa, age 29, was found dead at the scene, her life tragically cut short.

Her young son, a student at Blue Oak Elementary School, was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed shortly afterward, his young life stolen in the violence. Fortunately, another boy in the house survived the ordeal unharmed, but the emotional scars for the family and community will endure.

The investigation quickly focused on the suspect, who was identified as 47-year-old Darin McFarlin, a Cal Fire captain. McFarlin shared the residence with Marissa and the children, and authorities believe he was responsible for the shooting.

His role as a firefighter added a further layer of shock to the tragedy, as the community grapples with the reality that violence can strike even among those sworn to protect.

McFarlin was apprehended hours later in Mono County, far from the scene of the crime. He was promptly booked on two counts of homicide and remains held without bail, with authorities continuing their investigation.

This incident has sent shockwaves through Cameron Park and the surrounding areas, prompting residents to come together in mourning and reflection.

The loss of a young mother and her son, especially in such a violent and senseless manner, is a profound tragedy that leaves a lasting impact.

It reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of community support during times of crisis. Local officials and mental health professionals have expressed their condolences to the grieving families and are offering resources to help those affected process the trauma.

As the community mourns, questions linger about the motives behind the shooting and the circumstances that led to such a devastating act of violence.

Authorities continue to investigate, seeking to understand what drove McFarlin to take such drastic action.

Meanwhile, friends and family remember Marissa as a loving mother and a caring individual, and the young boy as a bright, innocent soul lost far too soon.

The tragedy underscores the urgent need for ongoing mental health support and violence prevention efforts to help prevent future tragedies in the community. Sincere condolences go out to everyone affected by this heartbreaking event, as they navigate the difficult road toward healing.
