The crash was so forceful that one man died on impact and another was left fighting for his life. Malachi Stein, 20, was driving a 2012 Nissan Versa eastbound on I-94 near Steele when he rear-ended a Subaru Crosstrek in heavy fog.

The collision was devastating, marked by an impact so intense that it resulted in the immediate death of one individual and left another fighting for life.

The tragic incident occurred along Interstate 94 near Steele, amidst a backdrop of heavy fog that severely limited visibility, making driving conditions perilous despite the dry pavement.

Malachi Stein, a 20-year-old man, was behind the wheel of a 2012 Nissan Versa traveling eastbound when the crash happened.

According to reports, Stein was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to slow down as he approached the vehicle in front of him. The lack of caution and possibly misjudged distance or speed contributed to him rear-ending a Subaru Crosstrek.

The force of the collision was so powerful that it caused fatal injuries to Stein, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. Emergency responders arrived promptly to the scene, but the injuries Stein sustained were too severe to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Subaru, 63-year-old Scott Johnson from New Meadows, Idaho, was critically injured in the crash. His vehicle was also significantly damaged, and he required immediate medical attention. Johnson was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was reported to be in critical condition.

The accident not only caused physical harm but also prompted a large-scale emergency response, involving multiple teams including police, fire rescue, and medical personnel. Their swift action was crucial in providing aid and managing the chaos that unfolded at the site.

Authorities from the Highway Patrol quickly secured the scene, beginning their investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading to the crash.

They are currently reviewing evidence, including witness statements, vehicle data, and environmental conditions, to establish a clear picture of what caused the accident.

While initial reports suggest that speeding and low visibility due to fog played a significant role, further analysis is ongoing to confirm all contributing factors.

This tragic event has left many in the community mourning the loss of Malachi Stein. His family and friends are grappling with the devastating news, and the community as a whole is reminded of the dangers posed by adverse weather conditions and reckless driving.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution, especially in foggy conditions, and to always wear seatbelts for safety.
