Willie Mays was born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama. From a young age, it was evident that Mays possessed extraordinary athletic talent. 

His professional baseball career began in the Negro Leagues, playing for the Birmingham Black Barons, before he was signed by the New York Giants in 1951. 

This marked the beginning of an illustrious career that would span over two decades.

Mays' career statistics are a testament to his prowess on the field. He finished with 660 home runs, 3,283 hits, and a .302 batting average. 

His remarkable defensive skills earned him 12 Gold Glove Awards, and he was a 24-time All-Star, reflecting his consistent excellence and popularity among fans and peers alike.
